Papers of Jeffrey Smart [manuscript]. 1956-1992.

The collection consists of 117 handwritten personal letters from Jeffrey Smart to close friend and fellow artist, Michael Shannon. The letters are in three groups: 1955-1960 written from Sydney; 1973-1979 and 1980-1992 written from Arezzo, Italy. Topics discussed include Australian art, travel, Smart's personal life and relationships, financial concerns, painting, other artists including Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Jacqueline Hicks, Donald Friend, John Olsen, Henry Miller, Brett Whiteley, Arthur Boyd, Sidney Nolan and Pro Hart. Also included are newspaper clippings enclosed with the letters and 7 photographs showing Smart, Shannon, Donald Friend, Dorothy Braud and others.

Painter. Born in Adelaide, Jeffrey Smart has lived in Italy for many years. He has exhibited regularly since 1957. See Alan McCulloch 'The Encyclopaedia of Australian Art'. Michael (David Michael) Shannon, painter, was born at Kapunda, S. A., in 1927 and died in 1993. Shannon studied at the National Gallery of Victoria, 1945-48 and then studied in London, Paris and Florence. His art has won numerous awards.
